C10 - Resources Flashcards
Resources are needed for (4)
Warmth
Shelter
Food
Transport
Some natural resources include
Food
Wood for building
Fuels for burning/energy
Materials for fabrics
How do we obtain natural resources?
Agriculture
How are we trying to replace natural resources
With synthetic materials
What is sustainability
Using natural materials in a way that does not compromise future generations’ ability to do the same
What is potable water
Water that has low enough levels of dissolved salts and microbes that it is safe to drink
Most effective way of obtaining potable water
-Take it from a fresh water source
-Filtermitmto re,one large insoluble particles
-Sterilise it using chlorine, ozone or UV
What is desalination
Removal of salt from water by distillation or reverse osmosis so it is safe to drink
Disadvantage of desalination
Expensive
Requires a lot of energy
What is waster water produced from
When we go to the toilet and also from industrial processes
How do we treat waste water before we release it back into the environment?
-Screening/ grit removal to get rid of large particles
-Sedimentation to allow tiny particles to settle out from still water, which produces sewage effluent and sewage sludge
-Aerobic bacteria is used on the sewage effluent and anaerobic digestion is used to treat sewage sludge
What is phytomining?
-plants are grown in soil that contains low grade ore
-the plants absorb metal ions through their roots and concentrate these ions in their cells
-the plants are harvested and burnt
-the ash left behind contains metal
-compounds
What is bioleaching?
-Certain bacteria can break down lowgrade ores to produce an acidic solution
containing copper ions.
The solution is called a leachate
What are the stages of the product life cycle assessment
-Extraction and processing of raw materials
-Manufacturing and packaging
-Use over it’s lifetime
-Disposal
-Transportation
Why do we use a product life cycle assessment
To predict the impact of a new product on the environment
We can reduce the impact a new product has on the environment by
-Using products less
-Reducing materials and energy needed to make product
-Recycling
What is corrosion
The destruction of metals over time due to chemical reactions
Which metals rust
Iron, steel
Copper corrodes when it reacts with ____ to create copper _____ (green)
Oxygen
Oxide
We can cover materials with_______ ________ that will corrode before the important metal underneath does
Sacrificial metals
Covering another metal with zinc is called
Galvanising
