COMMUNICATION is a systemic process in which people interact w/t and through SYMBOLS to create and interpret MEANINGS
C1-3: Features of COMMUNICATION
_ Process: Ongoing and continuously in motion
_ Systemic
1/ Occurs in a system of interrelated parts that affect one another
2/ Occurs in fixed, standardized ways that allow successful recognition and reciprocation
_ Symbols
All language and many nonverbal behaviors—anything that abstractly signifies something else

The significance we bestow on phenomena—what they signify to us
1/ Content Level – literal, denotative
2/ Relationship Level – relationships between communicators

(a) Personal Identity and Health
_ We gain personal identity as we communicate with others
_ Communication directly influences our physical and emotional well-being
(b) Relationship
_ the primary way we connect with others
_ Used to solve problems and resolve conflict
_ Used for self-disclosure
(c) Professional Values
_ Communication skills are closely linked to professional success
(d) Cultural Values
_ Crucial for participation is society (or politics) and for interacting with those from other cultures successfully
C1-6: LINEAR Model of Communication
(a) A one-way process in which one person acts on another person _ Who? _ Says what? _ In what channel? _ To whom? _ With what effect?
(b) Noise
_ Anything that interferes with the intended communication
_ Includes: physical (obstructions); psychological (emotions, moods, focus); physiological (physical ability, comfort level)

(a) Receivers respond to senders
(b) Senders listen to receivers _ Feedback 1/ Verbal or nonverbal 2/ Intentional or unintentional _ Create and interpret within fields of experience

_ People often simultaneously send and receive messages
_ Communication changes over time
_ Communication is subject to potential interference from noise
