C1. P5 Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
A network of glands in the body that communicate by sending hormones through the body’s bloodstream that are then absorbed by other glands, muscles, or the tissues of organs
What glands are not part of the endocrine system?
If a gland secretes externally
What does the endocrine system secrete?
Hormones
How do endocrine glands make hormones?
Take in material form the bloodstream to make hormones
What is the pituitary gland?
It tells other glands what to do by secreting, releasing, and inhibiting factors
What does the thyroid do?
Release hormones that impact energy level to help regulate cell metabolism
What do adrenal glands do?
Produce stress hormones
How does the brain regulate the pituitary gland?
Through the hypothalamus
How does the hypothalamus control the pituitary gland?
The hypothalamus releases releasing factors or inhibiting factors to the pituitary gland
What are feedback loops?
How the brain monitors the endocrine system by influencing the system, then monitoring changes, then adjusting ( As our German teacher would say, it would revise, then cut, revise, then cut )
What is the blood brain barrier?
A membrane separating the blood circulating around the brain from the brain’s tissue
Which is faster, the nervous system or the endocrine system?
Nervous system
Which effects last longer, the nervous system or the endocrine system?
Endocrine system
