C1: Making crude oil useful Flashcards
Name from the bottom the crude oil fractions.
Bitumen, fuel oils, heating oil, diesel, paraffin, petrol, LPG.
Crude oil can be separated because the hydrocarbons in different fractions have differently sized molecules.
Intermolecular forces are broken during boiling.
The molecules of the liquid separate from each other as molecules of gas.
Large molecules, e.g. Bitumen, have strong forces of attraction therefore a lot of energy is needed to break the bonds
How can transporting oil cause problems?
Oil slicks can damage bird feathers and can even kill them. Clean up operation use detergents which can be detrimental to wildlife.
Explain the conditions needed for cracking to take place.
High temperature and passing them over a cataylst.
