C1: Biolpgical Molecules Flashcards

1
Q

glycogen is (1/3 of polysaccharides)

A
  • main source of energy in aminals
  • forms glucose by hyrdolysis
  • large amt of branches = energy is released quickly bc. E can move onto + act simultaneously on more molecules and break their glyosidic bonds
  • large but compact = store lots of energy
  • insoluble = water can’t get into cell, good for storing glucose in liver + muscle

Q

diferrences between DNA and RNA

A

DNA has deoxyribose sugar, thymine, and is a double-stranded helix.
RNA has ribose sugar, uracil, and is single-stranded and shorter

Q

features of cellulose (1/3 polysaccharides)

A
  • not coiled, long unbranched chain
  • has B-glucose, with 1-4 glycosidic bonds
  • a fibrous protein
  • has H+ bonds between adjacent molecules which create microfibrils = strong structural support

Q

cellulose is

A
  • component of plant cell walls
  • straight chained
  • linked by H bonds to form microfibrils, so cellulose provides structural support
