C1 Flashcards
What are all substances made of?
Atoms
How many types of atoms do elements contain?
One
How many atoms do compounds contain?
More than one type
Describe an atoms centre.
A tiny nucleus as the centre surrounded by electrons.
What is a mixture made up of?
Two or more substances that are not chemically combined together.
How can mixtures be seperated?
By physical means such as filtration, crystallisation and simple distillation.
Describe how to carry out paper chromatography?
Set a beaker up with the bottom filled with water. Then, draw a line on a slip of paper in pencil and along the line dot different colours of mixture/inc. After this attach a paper clip to the top of the paper and let it hang in the water allowing the water to move up the paper. The further up the paper the mixture travels the more soluble the mixture is.
Who created the “plum pudding” model?
J.J. Thomson
Who created the nuclear model of the atom?
Rutherford’s
Who created the model of the atom used today?
Bohr
What are atoms made of?
Protons, neutrons, electrons
What is the relative charge of the following:
Proton
Neutron
Electrons
Proton= +1
Neutron= No overall charge
Electron= -1
What is the relative mass of both proton and neutron?
1
Why do atoms have no overall charge?
As the carry an equal charge of protons and electrons
What does the atomic number Equal?
Number of protons( =number of electrons)
