C2 Flashcards
What determines an elements position in the periodic table?
The atomic(proton) number
What determines an atoms chemical properties?
Number of electrons in outermost shell
What does the group number in the periodic table represent?
Number of electrons in the outermost shell
Why are the noble gases(group 0) unreactive?
Because they have a full outer shell
What is group 1 in the periodic table called?
The alkali metals.
In the alkali metals column of the periodic table, what happens to the melting and boiling points as you go down the group?
They decrease
What do all group 1 elements react with to produce hydrogen and an alkaline solution which contains the metal hydroxide?
Water
What type of ions do alkali metals produce in reactions?
1+ ions to make ionic compounds
What happens to the reactivity as u go down the alkali metals?
It increases
What is group 7 called in the periodic table?
The halogens?
When halogens form ionic compounds with metals, what form of ion is produced?
Ions with a single negative charge
How do halogens form covalent compounds?
By sharing electrons with other non-metals
What can a more reactive halogen do to a less reactive halogen from a solution of one of its salts?
Displace it
What happens to the reactivity of the halogens when u go down the group?
It decreases
Compared to alkali metals, transition elements have what?
A higher melting point and a higher density
