What is an input device?
A device that allows data to be entered into a computer system
EG: mouse
What is an output device?
A device that allows data to be transferred into a physical readable form
EG: speaker
What is a biometric device?
A device that uses human characteristics as a security mechanism
EG: fingerprint
What is a processors function?
To manage the function of a computer system by processing data and instructions
What is a motherbord?
The main circuitboard
CPU, ROM found there
What is the function of a power supplier unit?
To convert electricity to direct current so the computer can use it
What 2 types is memory split into?
And what do they mean?
Volatile and non volatile
Volatile: storage is temporary
Non volatile: storage saves (long term) even when off
What is random access memory (RAM) ?
It is a volatile storage that stores all programs that are currently running. Also stores part of the os so it can be accessed by the cpu
What is read only memory (ROM) ?
A non volatile storage that cannot be changed. It stores the boot program for the computer when it is turnt on.
What is cache memory?
A volatile storage that stores data that is frequently accessed.
EG: if you use youtube regularly this will be stored so you can easily access it on your computer
What is optical storage?
A form of secondary storage that uses a laser to project beams of light onto a disk, allowing to read data from a CD, DVD, etc
What is cloud storage?
A form of secondary storage where data is stored on large servers owned by hosting companies like google. They are responsible for keeping this data.
What is a solid state storage?
A form of secondary storage that replaces hard disk drives. EG: USB
