32 representatives from the winning countries, losing countries, such as Germany, were not invited.

What were Clemenceau’s aims?
A
- France wanted to cripple Germany and make sure it was never powerful enough to attack again.
- He wanted its armed forces reduced dramatically and its borders demilitarised.
- He wanted reparations to rebuild France.

Why did Clemenceau want to cripple Germany?
A
- Much of the fighting in WW1 was in France.
- Many mines, railways, factories, bridges and farmland had been destroyed and needed rebuilding.
- The French had the most deaths.
- His people wanted revenge on Germany.

What were Lloyd George’s aims?
A
- Lloyd George wanted to keep Germany strong enough to trade with.
- He didn’t want to treat Germany harshly in fear of another war.
- He wanted Germany’s colonies.
- He wanted naval supremecy.

What were Wilson’s aims?
A
- He wanted a world parliament called the League of Nations, which allowed countries to negotiate instead of start wars.
- He believed in self-determination which meant countries could rule themselves.
- He had 14 points for a better world, including freedom of the seas.

Why did Wilson not want to harm Germany?
A
- During the war, no fighting occurred on American soil.
- America made lots of money selling weapons to the Allies.
- Not many Americans died during the war, so they didn’t see the need for revenge.
- Wilson was concerned that being too harsh on Germany would result in war.
- Wilson was an idealist who dreamt of world peace.
