Latin America after the success of the Revolution
Overview
Cuba was perceived as a model state, with major advancces in health, education and nationalism.
1960s: upsurge in rural guerrilla conflict and urban terrorism against social inequality and political repression.
Cuban foreign policy
1962: provided moral and material support. Spearheaded by Guevara.
This is because:
* To break Cuba’s isolation as a sole communist country.
* Marist principles: internationalism, “full” communism

1964: America imposed economic sanctions on Cuba
To achieve “an order of peace and justice”
Organisation of Latin American Solidarity
1967: From Havana to encourage similar revolutions. However failure due to poor military and tactical preparations, and lack of popular support.
Summary of impact on Latin America
Cuba provided assistance with: weaponry and other resources, guerilla training.
E.g. The Bolivian Revolution, Salvadoran Civil War, in Venezuela and Nicaragua
Success: in Bolivia, Venezuela (close relations between Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro that resulted in beneficial trade between the countries)
