causes of FTT? (3)

A
  1. Internal - Underlying genetic condition that affects:
    - poor nutrient absorption & intake
    - metabolism
  2. External:
    - caloric deficit
    - abuse -> stress
    - caregiver’s lack of knowledge -> poor feeding methods
  3. Mixed: internal + external

signs of FTT? (5)

A
  1. dont want to eat -> poor muscle tone & activity + easily irritable + cant gain height & weight -> delays in dev milestones

How to diagnose FTT? (4)

A
  1. BMI & weight for age < 5th percentile
  2. < 80th percentile for median W:H ratio
  3. Weight deceleration crossing more than two major percentile lines on age and population
  4. Head circumference decreased

Treatment of FTT? (6)

A
  • Slow refeeding process & provide smaller amounts of food at frequent intervals
  • If unable to feed orally, insert NGT
  • Monitor nutritional & fluid I/O + weigh daily
  • Ensure child maintains a steady weight gain
  • Keep a log of what their child eats each day along with their daily weight
  • Contact HCP if child has difficulty eating, dw eat, vomit or lose weight
  • Treat underlying cause
