Q

What three things influence the size and energy of a wave?

A
  • How long the wind has been blowing
  • The strength of the wind
  • How far the wave has travelled (fetch)

Q

With a constructive wave…

Q

Give a few features about destructive:

A
  • Created in stormy conditions
  • Created from big strong waves when the wind is powerful and has been blowing for a long time
  • Wave energy is high and wave has traveled over long fetch
  • Erode the coast
  • Short wave length high and steep

Q

Give a few features about constructive waves:

A
  • Created in calm weather
  • Less powerful then destructive waves
  • Break on the shore and deposit material forming beaches
  • Long wavelength low in height

16
Q

Describe hydraulic power

A

Waves crash against the rocks and compress the air in the cracks. This puts pressure on the rock. Repeated compression widens the cracks and makes bits of rocks break off.

17
Q

Describe Abrasion

A

Eroded particles in the water scrape and rub against rocks, removing small peices

18
Q

Describe attrition

A

Eroded particles on the water smash into each other and break into smaller fragments. Their edges also get rounded off when they rub together

19
Q

Describe Solution

A

Weak carbonic acid in seawater dissolves rock like chalk and limestone

20
Q

What two ways are rocks broken down by?

A

Mechanical and chemical weathering

21
Q

What is weathering?

A

The breakdown of rocks from where they are

22
Q

What is erosion?

A

Rocks broken down and carried out by something else eg seawater
