C: Christians and the Purpose of Marriage Flashcards
Marriage is a public commitment to the permanence of a relationship.
During the marriage service the couple exchange rings. These are symbolic of unending love and commitment to each other.
Marriage is a sacrament that brings the couple closer to God.
A sacrament is a ceremony where God is present and which sanctifies the marriage. The marriage takes place “in the presence of God” and is sealed by Him; “Those whom God has joined, let no one put asunder.”
Marriage is a secure and stable environment in which to engage in a loving, sexual relationship.
For many Christians, keeping marriage as a place for sex is important. The ceremony confirms this when the couple pledge “with my body I honour you.”
Marriage provides an opportunity for children to be brought up within a faith environment.
Christians believe it is a duty to introduce their faith to their children. A marriage provides a foundation for this. The marriage service states that marriage is “the foundation of family life.”
