Democratic leadership
encourages employees participation in decision making. The leader still makes the decision but could consider the workers’ opinion.
Laissez-faire
allows workers to make their own decisions and trust the workers to work without direction
Laissez-faire strengths and limitations
(+)allows greater innovation due to the empowerment and enrichment passed to employees
(+)Increase sense of self esteem, trusted, less suspension and stress
(-)Greater risk - whether the employees will stay productive and work to a high enough quality given the the extra responsibility
(-)Depends on the ability of the worker to deal with the extra responsibility - some feel under supported and overwhelmed
Strengths and limitations of democratic
(+)Employees feel valued as their opinions contribute to decision making (Mayo - motivation at work was promoted by involving others in decision making and greater communication)
(+)Employees are engaged, more likely to work towards goals they have played a part in setting
(-)Depends on the type of workers - low skilled workers may not be skilled or motivated enough to enjoy the ability to contribute to decisions
