Business Case 2 Flashcards
Actual written exam question - see handouts
NHS has stopped direct funding covid and other respiratory virus testing. Your Trust, has been asked by the Integrated Care Board to fund respiratory pathogen testing internally, based on clinical need, on the basis of pre-SARS-CoV-2 pandemic hospital set-up. Panther has high costs, as does AusDx 24 well. Your Trust Operational Director working on advice of financial director, decided to stop funding assays with immediate effect.
Write brief notes on what evidence you, as a consultant virologist, would report to the Trust Operational Director. And what actions you would take to convince them thatSARS-CoV-2 testing and/or respiratory 24-pathogen multiplex assay should be maintained
Try to write your business case within 10 mins
Gather evidence - prevalence of disease, epidemilogical information from UKHSA respiratory surveillance
Patient case example - e.g influenza diagnosed promptly. Patient treated, isolated, prevented massive outbreak
Highlight benefits - better patient care - early diagnosis, earlier treatment with anti-virals, avoid antibiotics. Helps prevent spread of infection
Explain consequences - delayed diagnosis, increased spread of infection - HAI, increased costs associated with hospital stays/ disease, hospital reputation, legal costs if patients sue
Engage key stakeholders - Infection specialties, IPC, ED, Transplant, renal, paeds etc. Seek support from them
Address financial concerns - e.g costs of diagnostics are expensive, but are outweighed by the benefits
Communicate a proposal - old method, new platform, outsourcing, focussed testing
Schedule a meeting - stakeholders including Trust director and financial Director
Email everyone to clarify proposal, and minutes from meeting. Thank everyone for their time
After making a proposal, which senior members of staff need to be informed?
Chief executive
Executive directors -
Medical director
Financial officer
Chief operating officer
