Burns Flashcards
Wounds caused by exposure to:
- Excessive heat
- Chemicals
- Fire/steam
- Radiation
- Electricity
Types of burns
Thermal
Chemical
Electrical
Radiation
Burn wounds differentiated depending on the level of dermis and subcutaneous tissue involved
superficial
deep
full thickness
Epidermal tissue only affected. Not serious unless large areas involved
superficial burn
Involves the epidermis and deep layer of the dermis. Fluid-filled vesicles –red, shiny, wet, severe pain
deep burn
Destruction of all skin layers. Requires immediate hospitalization
full thickness burn
Formula to calculate total body surface area (TBSA)
Head & Neck = 9% Each upper extremity (Arms) = 9% Each lower extremity (Legs) = 18% Anterior trunk= 18% Posterior trunk = 18% Genitalia (perineum) = 1%
Phases of burn injury
Emergent (24-48 hrs)
Acute
Rehabilitative
Immediate problem is fluid loss, edema, reduced blood flow (fluid and electrolyte shifts).
emergent phase
Diet after a burn
Nothing by mouth
Begin oral fluids
