What is a burn?
A
A burn is damage to the skin due to
intense heat, electricity, radiation or
certain chemicals.

How many types of burns are there and what are the types?
A
There are three types of burns:
- Superficial partial thickness (1 st degree)
- Deep partial thickness (2nd degree)
- Full-thickness burn (3rd degree)

What kind of damage occurs in a Superficial partial thickness (1st degree) burn?
A
- warm and reddened skin as dermal blood vessels dilate.
- mild edema
- possible shedding of skin with time
- Tend to heal rapidly – 2 to 3 days.
- Sunburns are 1st degree burns.

What kind of damage occurs in a Deep partial thickness (2nd degree) burn?
A
- Blisters may appear – from fluid thatescapes from the damaged dermal capillaries.
- Skin regeneration
- Scar tissue does not normally develop with this type of burn.

What kind of damage occurs in a Full-thickness burn (3rd degree)?
A
- Burned skin can appear grey-white, cherryred or blackened.
- Destroy nerve endings so it is not painful
- Skin regeneration may occur, but usuallyrequires skin grafting.
- Scar tissue will form in this type of burn.
