Burns are determined by
A
Two criteria
Total body surface affected
Depth of burn and number of tissue layers

First degree burn
A
Mild, like most sunburns.
Epidermis may be red and painful, usually no blisters

Second degree burn
A
Affects skin. Two and lower layers (dermis). Pain, redness, swelling, blistering

Third degree burn
A
Affects all skin layers.
Also destroys hair follicles and sweat glands. Pain is minimal due to damaged nerve endings.
Burned skin may appear white, red, black and leathery.

Rule of nines
A
Body is divided into 11 areas of 9% each.
Area around genitals represents the 1% of body surface area.
