Independent agency
Government unit that closely resembles cabinet level departments but has a narrow area of responsibility ( like CIA ) and is NOT part of the cabinet. It’s heads serve a term of years rather than serving at the presidents pleasure.
Bureaucracy
The system of departments and offices, run by appointees and merit employees, necessary to transform the public will into specific action
Governement corporation
A governmental body set up and run at taxpayer expense to serve and perform the functions that could be provided by the private sector
Regulation
Rules that govern the operations of a particular government program and has the force of law
Deregulation
The lifting of restrictions on business, industry, and other professional activities for which governement rules were established by law or the bureaucracy
Congressional (legislative) oversight
The means by which the congress monitors the activities of the executive branch and agencies to determine if laws are being faithfully executed. The most obvious form is hearings on agency budget requests.
Discretionary authority
The extent to which appointed bureaucrats can choose courses of action and make policies not spelled out in law.
Civil service
The system created by law which by which appointments or jobs to the government are made
Iron triangle
The policy making network consisting of government agency, a congressional committee, and an interest group. This is less common today and is more accurately referred to as a policy (issue) network
Department
A major administrative unit with responsibly for a broad area of government operations. Department status usually indicates a permanent national interest in that particular government function.
Regulatory commission administrative
Bodies headed by several commissioners, directors, or governors, —- appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate. They serve fixed terms and cannot be removed at the pleasure of the president. The ICC or TVA arw examples.
