Q

Why are vesicles used to transport molecules + not channel/carrier proteins?

A

Since molecules are too large to go through channel or carrier proteins

E.g. hormones, enzymes

Q

What is endocytosis process?

A
  1. Cell surface membrane bends inwards when in contact with material needing to be transported
  2. Membrane enfolds material until membrane fuses, becoming a vesicle
  3. Vesicle moves into cytoplasm + transfers material for further processing in cell

Q

What is the exocytosis process?

A
  1. Vesicles, usually formed by golgi apparatus, move towards + fuse with cell surface membrane
  2. Contents of vesicle are released outside of cell

Q

Where is ATP needed in bulk transport?

A
  • Movement of cells along cytoskeleton
  • Changing shape of cells to engulf materials
  • Fusion of cell membranes as vesicles form or meet cell surface membrane bends inwards
