Bulk properties of solids 2 Flashcards
shearing stress
When the force is applied tangentially to the surface, shape changes without change in volume.
hydraulic stress
When a solid body undergoes change in volume without change in geometric shape.
tensile stress (longitudanal stress)
If a stress applied results in the increase of the length of an object then we call it tensile strength.
compressive stress
the stress applied results in decrease in length.
strain
change in configuration/original configuration
types of strain
- Longitudinal strain
- Bulk
- Shear
longitudinal strain
Due to repeated action of tensile stress, longitudinal strain develops in a body
Hooke’s law
Extension produced in a wire is directly proportional to the load applied within the elastic limit.
Modulus of Elasticity (K)
It is a stress required to develop unit strain
Difference between elasticity and elastic limit.
Elastic limit is the property of a body while elasticity is the property of a material.
Elastic after effect
It is a temporary delay, in regaining the original configuration by an elastic body after removal of deforming force.
Define yielding point
Yielding point is a region when the load is removed from the body comes back to the original shape after the time lag it is a property of elastic after effect.
