Bulk properties of solids Flashcards
Elasitcity
it is a property of matter due to which it develops a force within itself to oppose any deforming force. Thus regaining its shape and size when the force is removed.
deforming force
the force applied extremely to deform any object is called deforming force
restoring force
The force developed internally in an objective in order to restore its shape which was lost due to deforming force is called restoring force.
Young’s modulus
It is the ratio of normal stress to longitudanal strain.
Bulk modulus
It is the ratio of normal stress to volumetric strain
Modulus of rigidity
ratio of tangential stress to shear strain.
Elastic fatigue
The property often elastic body by virtue of its behavior becomes less elastic due to the repeated action of deforming force.
Poisson’s ratio
when a deforming force is applied at the free end of a wire of length ‘l’ And radius ‘r’ When the length increases by dl the radius decreases by dr.
lateral strain by longitudanal strain.
elastic potential energy
When a wire is stretched work is done Against the intermolecular forces. The work gets stored in the wire as elastic potential energy.
F=
YAl/L
W=
YA/L (l2/2)
1/2 x stress x strain x volume
U=
1/2 x Y x strain^2
define stress
It is the internal restoring force, per unit area of a deformed body.
restoring force/area
Types of stress
- Normal stress
- Shearing stress
- hydraulic stress
- Tensile stress
- Compressive stress
