What does soft security consist of?
Rules and regulations that are in place to protect the particular site.
What two components does physical security have?
hard security and soft security.
What does hard security consists of?
Technology such as locks, lights, alarms, fences, and other barriers and vaults.
What is risk?
Threat + Vulnerability.
What is the point of a threat assessment?
identifies risk and determines probability and criticality.
What types of assets are typically protected?
People, property, information, and image.
What are examples of Loss events?
bomb threats, floods, fires, or criminal acts.
What is the first line of defense for a property?
The property line that could consist of natural barriers such as a river or cliff or man-made barriers such as a fence.
What is the second line of defense for a property?
The exterior of a building or structure
What is the third line of defense for a property?
The interior controls that are in place to protect a particular room or object.
Soft security components consist of?
rules and procedures.
What do countermeasures in physical security consist of?
barriers, lights, locks, alarms, video, fencing, and gates.
What objectives need to be kept in mind considering a barrier for your countermeasure?
define what our property boundaries are.
deter entry for those who are not authorized, and allow entry for those who are.
delay entry momentarily until proper checks are made.
channel and direct the flow of personnel and vehicle traffic in a safe and efficient manner.
deploy and utilize our security resources in such a way that we are both effective and efficient
What effect does a good security lighting system have on a security program?
First, it enhances security by creating a psychological deterrent.
Second, light can actually be a physical deterrent as well.
What four factors do we consider when we look at lighting from a security perspective?
Size, Contrast, Brightness, Time
What are some types of lighting that are dealt with in the security industry?
Continuous (Most common type. Fixed lights are installed that cover an area overlapping zones of light.)
Standby (Similar to continuous lighting, but are not left on all night. Left on for specific situations or circumstances)
Movable (Mobile lighting that is manually operated. Used for special situations to supplement other lighting sources)
Emergency (Usually contains its own lighting source and is activated automatically when the primary lighting system fails)
What are some types of lighting equipment that are dealt with in the security industry?
Floodlights (Covers both large and small areas, varying beam widths and brightness levels)
Streetlights (diffused lights as opposed to a directional beam; can light large areas)
Fresnel lights (shine fan shaped beam of light that goes out 180 degrees horizontally and 20 degrees vertically. Best in situations where glare could be a problem in the surrounding area)
Searchlights ( Send out a highly focused beam of light that are easily aimed. Handheld models are available)
What is one interesting fact about emergency lighting?
Emergency lighting usually contains its own power source.
What are the four basic types or styles of locks and lock systems?
Lever locks (The kind you find in file cabinets, desks, and lockers.)
Warded Locks (The ones with a keyhole you can see through.)
Disc Tumbler Locks (The kind you find in antique automobiles.)
Pin Tumbler Locks ( These are the most widely used kind of locks in the industry.)
What makes for the best fence?
those constructed in a straight line.
What are the three basic types of fences?
Chain link ( hung on steel poles with metal hanging hardware.)
Barbed wire (Often used in conjunction with chain link.)
Barbed Tape/Concertina ( Used on the top of some chain link or on the ground inside a double row of chain link fence.)
What should an officer do when getting know information pertaining to soft security?
Verify with higher ups.
How is an alarm triggered?
When an electrical circuit is completed or interrupted.
What is the main goal when it comes to protecting property?
eliminating the opportunity for intrusion
