BS 1.5 - Development Flashcards
How does nervous system develop in fetus?
Via NEURULATION, in which the notochord stimulates overlying ectoderm to fold over, creating a neural tube topped with neural crest cells
What becomes of the neural tube?
It becomes the CNS
What becomes of the neural crest?
Spreads out thru body, differentiating into many different tissues
What is a primitive reflex?
An automatic reflex of infants that should disappear with age
Most served a protective role in earlier species times
They can reappear in certain nervous system disorders
What is rooting reflex?
Primitive reflex that causes infant to turn head toward anything that brushes the cheek
What is the Moro reflex?
Primitive reflex that causes infant to extend arms, then slowly retract them and cries in response to sensation of falling
What is the Babinski reflex?
Primitive reflex that causes infant to extend big toe and fan other toes in response to brushing sole of foot
What is the grasping reflex?
Primitive reflex that causes infant to grasp anything put into his or her hand
What is a developmental milestone?
Gives indication of what skills and abilities a child should have at a given age
Most children adhere closely to these milestones, deviating by only 1-2 months
What is trend of motor skills milestones?
Gross and fine motor skills progress head to toe and core to periphery
What is trend of social skills milestones?
Shift from parent-focused to self-focused to other-focused
What is trend of language skills milestones?
Become increasingly complex and structured
