BS 1.3 - Parts of The Forebrain Flashcards
What is the role of the thalamus?
Relay station for sensory information
What is the role of the hypothalamus and how is it related to the hypophyseal portal system and anterior pituitary?
Hypothalamus maintains homeostasis and integrates with the endocrine system through the hypophyseal portal system that connects it to the anterior pituitary
What is the role of the basal ganglia?
Smoothes movements and helps maintain posture stability
What is the role of the limbic system and what structures does it include?
Structures — septal nuclei, amygdala, hippocampus
Limbic system controls emotion and memory
What is the role of the septal nuclei?
Involved with feelings of pleasure, pleasure-seeking behavior, and addiction
What is the role of the amygdala?
Controls fear and aggression
What is the role of the hippocampus?
Consolidates memories and communicates with other parts of the limbic system thru an extension called the fornix
How is the cerebral cortex divided?
Into four lobes
Frontal
Parietal
Occipital
Temporal
What is the role of the frontal lobe?
Controls executive function, impulse control, long term planning, motor function, and speech production
What is the role of the parietal lobe?
Controls sensation of touch, pressure, temperature, and pain.
Also, spatial processing, orientation and manipulation.
What is the role of the occipital lobe?
Controls visual processing
What is the role of the temporal lobe?
Controls sound processing, speech perception, memory and emotion
How is the brain divided?
Into 2 cerebral hemispheres, left and right.
In most individuals, left is dominant for language.
