Bryozoa Flashcards
The body cavity of the second division of the deuterostome body.
Mesocoel
What is the body plan formed from?
Body formed from polypid and cystid
What is the cecum
A bleb off the main tubular digestive system where food comes in, gets digested, and then the waste goes back out into the same tube as it came in. Nutrients filtered out through the bottom of cecum.
Define the funiculous
Nutrient transport tube that stem from the bottom of the cecum.
What three things define lophophorates?
Tripartate coelom
Lophophore
U-shaped gut
Define tripartite coelom
Refers to enterocoely. Occurred because three pouches of endoderm blebbed off to form three pouches of mesoderm.
How the bryozoa colony grows
budding
What two components make up the body of bryozoa?
polypids and cystids
What is a lophophore?
A ring of ciliated tentacles surrounding the mouth of the organism
What is the name of the bryozoan cell that starts a colony
Ancestrula
What is a colony of bryozoans
Zoarium (cross between zoo and aquarium?)
Casing that bryozoans live in
Zoecium
What are the name of the organ tissues that live inside the zoecium
cystids
What is the polypide
the part of the bryozoans that is the lophophore
What is special about the cilia of the lophophore on the bryozoans
They are hollow with longitudinal and circular muscles, allowing for very delicate movement
What is the cavity within the tentacles of the lophophore called?
Mesocoele
What coelomate cavity contains the ganglion?
The protocoele
What is a funiculus?
a channel that transports nutrients from the cecum to other parts of the body
What is a statoblast?
An egg-like structure that survives the winter and contains bryozoan cells, which are propogated in the spring.
Since the bryozoite is a tripartate coelom, each coelom is associated with what part of the body? (This is kinda nasty)
Mesocoel - lophophore
Protocoel - epistome
Metacoel - body cavity
What is a structure above or covering the mouth?
epistome
