Annelids Flashcards
Where is the dorsal heart located?
Pericardial cavity
What is metamerism?
Repetition of a segment of a body
What kind of chitin is used by this group?
Beta-chitin
Name of the anal opening is called
Pygidium
What surrounds the mouth of the worm?
Peristomium
Leaches are annelids that have turned…
To predation
Size of coelomic space in Earthworms?
Large
What role do seta play in the earthworm
They are able to stick out when the longitudinal muscle contracts, used to anchor worm to substrate
What is role of coelomic fluid?
Hydrostatic skeleton
What direction does the dorsal vessel push blood?
Forward
What blood vessels connect dorsal and subneural?
ventral
What is the correct name for worm hearts/?
Aortic arches
What is main reason for aortic arches?
Supply richest blood to reproductive organs
What is the role of chloragogen tissue?
Used for deamination of blood
Define typhlosole?
gut is infolded to make more surface area
Define calciferous glands?
Used to take out calcium that is found in food source
Describe the metanephridia
Rids organism of metabolic waste, coelomic fluid picked up by the nephrostome, and then flushed out nephridiopore
What side is the brain located on?
Dorsal
Role of clitellum
Used to bind the mating worms together, and later shrugs off to form cocoon for the egg
How the egg of worms is formed
Once insemiated, the clitellum starts to shrug of the worm. As it passes the ovary opening, the fertilized egg is released into the clitellum. The entire thing shrugs off, clitellum seals around entire egg.
What is similar to some insect development?
No larval stage
How are the parapodia moved?
Oblique muscles
What two kinds of muscle do clitalata have?
Longitudinal and obliques
What is the difference between the neuropodium and the notopodium?
Neuropodium is on the ventral side, like the nerve cord.
Define nereid movement
Oblique muscles on one side contract, allowing body to wiggle back and forth (sinusoidal movement)
What is the role of cirrus
They are fleshy extensions that sense the medium the organism is passing through
What is important about the body cavity of leeches?
Basically gone, only small coelomic space around nerve cords and such
How many jaws do leaches have?
three
The decrease in coelomic cavity allows for expansion of what?
The digestive system
