BRS Pharm & Physio Flashcards
Somatostatin inhibits the release of
growth hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary
Octreotide is used to treat
- acromegaly;
- severe diarrhea associated with hypersecretory states
- upper GI bleeding; and
- TSH-secreting adenomas.
Lanreotide
long-acting somatostatin analog
Chronic administration of GnRH
inhibits the release of both LH and FSH by causing a reduction in the number of GnRH receptors.
Drugs that reduce (CNS) dopaminergic activity cause
increase in prolactin secretion:
(1) Antipsychotics,includingchlorpromazineandhaloperidol
(2) Antidepressants,includingimipramine
(3) Antianxietyagents,includingdiazepam
Prolactin-releasing factor (PRF)
Several peptides, including thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)
Bromocriptine
an agonist of dopamine D2-receptors and an antagonist of D1-receptors.
Cabergoline
It is more effective
in reducing hyperprolactinemia than bromocriptine and has a long half-life that permits twice-weekly dosing.
