what is a brownfield site?
an area within a city which is NO LONGER IN USE
the area may contain old factories or been cleared for development
what are the positives of developing a brown field site?
- environmentally they reuse old land as oppose to wasting it
- already have infrastructure and transport and communication links
- central location near services e.g. hospital
- economic benefits with redevelopment
what are negatives of developing a brownfield site?
- the buildings are not very nice and are derelict therefore the area has a poor reputation it may be hard then to sell properties
- cost of demolition is high
- the soil is contaminated full of pollutants due to old factories
- poor roads for big lorries
- limited space in a city
- more traffic upsets locals
what is deindustrialisation?
deindustrialisation started in the 1970/80s when companies closed down their factories in HICs and moved them to LICs where production costs are cheaper and rules are more lax. The land left behind by the factories is known as brownfield land.
what does redevelopment mean?
When buildings in a city which are no longer in use are demolished and replaced with buildings which are in current demand
what does renewal mean?
when old buildings are renovated and brought up to date, combining the best of the old with the new
