A
Inflammation of the lower respiratory tract by a viral cause, leading to respiratory distress and fine inspiratory crackles

A
Widespread fine inspiratory crackles Wheeze Coryza Cough Apnoea (esp <4 months) Cyanosis Tachypnoea Recession Hyperinflation

Pneumonia CF Cardiac failure Aspiration Congenital lung disease

Investigations
A
Nasopharyngeal aspirate
CXR NOT routinely but if: severe illness with suspected sepsis; apnoea; aspiration, cardiac failure or CF suspected
Blood gas if deteriorating and may need ventilation

Management
A
- Low threshold for admission 90%
- Other: Abx if suspect secondary bacterial infection; Palivzumab (monthly monoclonal Ab to prevent RSV) in those with severe chronic lung disease (home O2)
NOT steroid, bronchodilators, adrenaline or ribavarin
