Bronchiectasis Flashcards
Hallmark of bronchiectasis
Persistent or recurrent cough with production of large amounts of purulent sputum that can exceed 500 mL per day
Define bronchiectasis
Characterized by permanent, abnormal dilation of one or more large bronchi. Pathophysiologic change that results in dilation is destruction of the elastic and muscular structure support in the bronchial wall
Therapy for bronchiectasis
Therapy is aimed at treating acute flare ups and preventing a decline in lung function
Mainstay of treatment for bronchiectasis
Antibiotics given empirically, but attempts are made to culture the sputum. Long-term suppressive therapy with antibiotics is reserved for those patients with symptoms that recur a few days after stopping antibiotics
Nursing goal for bronchiectasis
Promote drainage and removal of bronchial mucous. Rest, good nutrition, and adequate hydration are also important
