What is included in Bronchiectasis severity index?
The bronchiectasis severity index (BSI) is a prospectively validated scoring system that stratifies the risk of hospitalisation and mortality in patients with bronchiectasis. The criteria include age, predicted FEV1 (%), BMI, hospital admissions in the last 2 years, exacerbations in the last 12 months, MRC dyspnoea score, colonisation status and radiological severity. Hospitalisation in the last 2 years (c) carries a score of 5 points and, as such, is the feature associated with a worse prognosis in her case. A BMI of <18.5 19 kg/m2 (a), MRC score 3+ (b) and age > 50 years (e) are markers of poor outcome according to the BSI. Radiologically, cystic changes or multilobar bronchiectasis involving 3 or more lobes are associated with a negative outcome (d).
