Goal of cancer treatment: expectation that treatment will likely eliminate the cancer and it will not return
Cure
Goals of cancer treatment: expectation the cancer may not completely go away but will be controlled to allow the patient to have improved quality of life and potentially have a longer survival living with cancer as a chronic disease
Control
Goals of cancer treatments: goal is to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life
Palliation
Timing of therapy: chemotherapy that is given before surgery to reduce the size of the tumor so that it is easier to remove with surgery
Neoadjuvant
Timing of therapy: chemotherapy that is given after the surgical removal of cancer to eradicate any residual cancer cells that may be left
Adjuvant
Timing of therapy: the continued use of chemotherapy to help lower the risk of reoccurence or to prevent the spread of disease in patients with advanced cancer
Maintenance
Types of chemotherapy: interfere with DNA of fast growing cells
