Was passed to end discrimination against men or women on the basis of their gender or their marital status.

It also aimed to ensure equality of opportunity in the fields of employment and education to outlaw harassment.
What happens for the first time ever for a woman in 1971?
In 1971 women are allowed to apply for a mortgage without a male guarantor, the first time ever.

In 1975 women get the right to property in the divorce proceedings.
How did the role of women not really change though during this time period?
Very limited numbers of women in professional jobs, even if they did have these ‘professional jobs’ they were often paid less then their male counterparts.
Why is this period described as a ‘second wave of feminism’?
-In 1977, ‘Reclaim the Night’ marches were held across Britain in response to the murders of the Yorkshire Ripper.
-General attitude towards rape changes dramatically with women pushing back against the social norms surrounding the crime. The first rape crisis center was opened in London in 1976 and the domestic violence act made it possible for women to tackle violence against women.
Why did women politicians not support the second wave of feminism?
-All in all, the time was considered a ‘second wave of feminism’ however these women were not supported by leading women politicians such as Barbara Castle and Margaret Thatcher separated themselves from such feminist as they were viewed badly in the media and on TV.

The death of Blair Peach, an Anti-Nazi league supporter and teacher in 1979, highlighted poor relation with the police. He was struck on the head with a police truncheon and died. The police only admitted they were responsible in 2010.

The rest of the population viewed people who supported these ideas, as ‘do gooders’. These set the seeds for the formation of the Green party in 1984.
