Subsidiary alliances?

A

-Lord Wellesley as GG 1798
-local rulers would be allowed to rule only if they agreed to get British army protection
-ruler would pay the army cost and accept a British resident advisor
-consolidated British power with little cost
EXAMPLES
-Nizam of Hyderabad 1798 (barred from the alliance with french and Marathas)
-Tipu Sultan refused but was defeated in 1799
