What are the key dates and events concerning people signing up to fight?
1914- Kitchener calls for volunteers (1/2 million men signed up in a month)
1916- conscription introduced
When and what was Dora?
It was passed in August 1914. It allowed the government to take control of industries, take over 2.5 million acres of land/buildings and control drinking hours. It also allowed censorship, rationing and conscription.
What were the first places that were attacked?
Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby- 137 killed.
When was the first Zeppelin attack?
1915.
In total there were 52 Zeppelin attacks, 1000 people were killed and barrage balloons were put up to prevent attacks.
When and what was the shell scandal?
In 1915 not enough ammunition and weapons were being made. Soldiers had to train with sticks instead of rifles.
The shell scandal was because of the men going to war so women began being employed. This was Lloyd George’s idea- he was made the minister of munitions.
When was the Battle of the Somme?
1916
The film was released in 1916 as war propaganda.
What was the problem in 1917?
German u-boats thank one in for supply ships (in April Britain had six weeks supply of wheat left)
Voluntary rationing was introduced because of this.
When was compulsory rationing introduced?
1918.
Rationing was compulsory for beer, butter, sugar and meat.
The black market was set up to counter increasing prices and shortages.
What was the women’s land Army?
It was set up in 1917 numbers and labour force available to work on farms to grow food.
How many women replaced men in jobs from 1914 to 1918? What groups were set up for women?

As drivers, cooks and telephonists into the WAAC, WRNS and WRAF.
What was British summertime?
Working hours that was introduced to give more daylight hours in which farmers could work.
