Breathing System Flashcards
Trachea (windpipe)
Carries air between mouth nose and lungs
Larynx (voicebox)
Makes sound
Rings of cartalige
Keeps airways open
Bronchus
Branch of the trachea that carries air to the lungs
Bronchioles
Branches of the broncholi that carry air to the alveoli to lungs
Diaphram
Sheet of muscle that moves down to draw air into the lungs and up to push air out of the lungs
Alveolus
Gas exchange takes place here
Intercostal muscle
Muscles between the ribs that are involved in breathing
Nose
1: warm the air
2: hair and mucus trap dust and bacteria
Ribs
Protect the lungs and heart
Epiglottis
Stops food and drink from entering the lungs
Inhalation
Air moves into the lungs
1: rib cage moves up and out
2: diaphram flattens
3: lungs expand
4: air is drawn
Exhalation
Air moves out of the lungs
1: rib cage moves down and in
2: diaphram moves up
3: lungs are squeezed
4: air is pushed out
Gas exchange
Takes place in the alveoli
Gases carbon dioxide and water vapor move out of the blood and into the alveoli
Oxygen gas
Moves out of the alveolus and into the blood by diffusion
