breathing/respiration Flashcards
1
Q
what happens when you inhale?
A
- the intercostal muscles contract so the ribs move upwards and outwards
- diaphragm contracts and flattens
- volume increases so pressure decreases.
2
Q
what happens when you exhale?
A
- the intercostal muscles relax so ribs move downwards and inwards.
- diaphragm relaxes and moves up.
- volume decreases and so pressure increases
3
Q
where does aerobic respiration take place?
A
in the mitochondria of a cell
4
Q
what is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
A
glucose + oxygen ——> carbon dioxide + water
5
Q
what does anaerobic respiration not need?
A
oxygen
6
Q
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?

glucose —–> lactic acid (+energy)
7
Q
what do we call yeast when it respires?
A
fermentation
8
Q
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast?
