Breathing and respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
It is the act of taking in oxygen or glucose and creating energy .
What is the Aerobic respiration equation?
Glucose + Oxygen = Water + CO2 + Energy
What is aerobic respiration?
aerobic respiration is the breathing of oxygen and the exhaling of carbon dioxide
what is Anaerobic respiration?
it is a form of respiration that breaks down glucose into energy without oxygen.
but it makes lactic acid instead of carbon dioxide and water.
When does your body do Anaerobic respiration?
when you can’t take in enough oxygen or need to move fast
Why is Anaerobic respiration so bad for you?
it is bad for you because it produces lactic acid instead of carbon dioxide and causes cramps.
What are the organs involved in human gas exchange?
Gas exchange takes place in the nose, trachea, diaphragm, lungs.
How are lungs adapted to gas exchange?
Large surface area
Thin walls
Good blood supply
How are your lungs kept clean?
On the way down the windpipe, tiny hairs called cilia move gently to keep mucus and dirt out of the lungs.
What is the difference between the air we breathe in and air we breathe out?
Air breathed in has more oxygen and less carbon dioxide and same amount of nitrogen
Air breathed out has less oxygen and more carbon dioxide and same amount of nitrogen
How do we get oxygen to the muscles?
Hemoglobin carries the oxygen to the red blood cells
What is the anaerobic respiration equation
glucose = lactic acid + energy
How do fish support gas exchange?
Fish use gills to carry out gas exchange
