breathing and circulation Flashcards
why is breathing important?
to bring into the body and gas exchange
where does gas exchange occur?
our lungs
where does air enter the body?
nose and mouth
what does the treachea do?
carries air into the body through branches called bronchi
what does bronchi do?
each bronchus brings air into a lung
what do bronchi do?
split into smaller branches called bronchioles which carry air to tiny air sacs called alveoli
when does breathing occur?
occurs as our diaphragm and rib muscles contract and relax
where is there more oxygen?
inhaled air
what does the circulatory system do?
transports heat and important substances around the body
what is blood made up of?
plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
what is plasma?
liquid part of the blood and has many substances dissolved in it
what does red blood cells do?
carry oxygen around the body
what do white blood cells do?
fight infection and protecting us from disease
what are platelets important for?
forming blood clots
what are the 3 types of blood vessels?
arteries, veins and capillaries
what are arteries?
carry blood away from the heart and have think walls
what do veins do?
carry blood to the heart and have thinner walls
what do capillaries do?
very thin walls that allow substances to diffuse into and out of the blood
what does the human heart do?
acts as a pump and serves a double circulation system
what does the blood that is pumped from the right side of the heart do?
collect oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide
what does oxygen that is pumped from the left side of the heart do?
deliver oxygen to the body and collects carbon dioxide waste. it then returns to the heart once more
what does each heartbeat cause?
a pulse
where can a pulse be felt?
in the arteries
what increases a heartbeat?
excersise
