Breathing Flashcards
Why do multicellular organisms require special breathing systems
They don’t have enough surface area to volume ratio for oxygen to be able to diffuse all the cells
What is an amoeba
A single cell organism
What takes place in the alveoli
Gas exchange
What is alveoli
Gas sacs at the end of the bronchioles
How do amoebas get oxygen without lungs
Diffusion
What is diffusion
The movement of particles from high to low concentration (e.g in an amoeba, there is more oxygen outside the cell, so the particles will move into the cell by diffusion)
What is gas exchange
The process of breathing in oxygen, which gets transported from the lungs to the red blood cells, and the process of breathing out the carbon dioxide, which gets transported from the red blood cells to the lungs
