Which medications are safe to use whilst breastfeeding?

A
  1. Abx: penicillins, cephalosporins, trimethoprim
  2. Endocrine: glucocorticoids (low doses only), levothyroxine (doesn’t affect neonatal hypothyroidism screening)
  3. Epilepsy: sodium valproate, carbamazepine
  4. Asthma: salbutamol, theophyllines
  5. Psychiatric: TCAs, antipsychotics (NOT clozapine)
  6. Hypertension: beta-blockers, hydralazine
  7. Anticoagulants: warfarin, heparin
  8. Digoxin

What measures can be taken to suppress lactation?

A
  1. Stop the lactation reflex - stop suckling or expressing
  2. Supportive measures: supportive bra and analgesia
  3. Cabergoline - 1st line medication of choice if required
