What is mastitis and the symptoms?
- Inflammation of the breast
- Hardness, pain, redness, chills, fever
What is the cause of mastitis?
-Bacteria from the infants nose or pharynx
Why do some mothers have a decreased milk supply?
- Lack of confidence.
- Expectations

- Inexperience
What is the treatment of mastitis?
- Mild: Nothing, empty breasts
- Moderate/ severe: Antibiotics and analgesia
What are factors influencing whether to breastfeed or not?
- Culture
- Sociodemographic factors

- Intent to return to work of school
What are the signs breast feeding is going well?
- 6 wet nappies in 24 hours
- 3 stools in 24 hours until 6 weeks
- Feeds 8-12 times in 24 hours
- Baby gains 25 grams a day, 175 a week
When is breast feeding contraindicated?
- Herpes on nipples
- Taking lithium
- Restricted diets
- Has breast cancer, HPV, hep, chemo
- Uses illegal drugs
What hormones are involved in the production of breast milk?
- Prolactin
- Oxytocin
