Breast Disease Flashcards
What are the 4 types of breast cancer?
1) Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
2) Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC)
3) Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS)
4) Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC)
What are the features of DCIS?
- Non-invasive
- Premalignant
What does DICS look like on mammogram?
Microcalcification
What is the most common type of breast cancer?
Invasive ductal carcinoma (70% of breast cancers)
What can some DCIS progress to?
IDC
Describe the mass in IDC
Unilateral, firm mass
How does IDC metastasise?
Through lymph or blood
What does Paget’s disease of the breast look like?
Red/scaly lesion on the nipple - looks like eczema
What happens in Paget’s disease of the breast?
- Cancerous cells in the ducts move through a pore and settle between the squamous epithelial cells on the nipple
- This resulting inflammation brings ECF out from the breast onto the skin, which then dries and crusts
How do you diagnose Paget’s disease of the breast?
Biopsy
What are the key features of LCIS?
- In lobules, doesn’t invade ducts
- Increases cancer risk in either breast
- Uncommon
How do you diagnose LCIS?
Biopsy
What type of breast cancer is typically ER+?
ILC
What % of breast cancers are ILC?
10-15%
What do ILCs typically progress from?
LCIS
