Breast Flashcards
In what areas of the body can breast tissue be present?
anywhere along the milk line
What form of secretion is used by a lactating breast?
merocrine and apocrine
resting breast
blunt ducts in the lobule (no well-developed acini), inactive duct system
physiological cycle of the breast
resting –> differentiation (pregnancy) –> involution (b/t pregnancies) –> atrophy (aging)
physical stimulation of nursing releases…
(1) oxytocin which causes contraction –> milk release (2) production of prolactin, which maintains continued milk production by secretory acini
What stimulates the transition from resting –> lactating breast?
prior to parturition, lactation is inhibited by high levels of placental estrogen + progesterone; these drop –> lactation begins under stim of prolactin
