Branches of Engineering Flashcards
Which branch of Engineering specialises in solutions that protect against natural and man made changes in coastal regions?
Coastal Engineering
What does a well considered Coastal Engineering solution consist of?
Can provide strucutal and non-structural protection against coastal changes,
and can maximise benefits while minimising adverse effects of potential on problematic area of a coastline.
What are effects of contruction on coastal areas that Coastal Engineers need to be aware of?
Man made structures can destroy a coastal environments natural defenses against processes like erosion.
What do Coastal Engineers do?
- Develop Solutions to prevent or reduce the risk of corrosion. Requiring an understanding of the natural processes surrounding the coastal environment.
- Perform studies of specific areas to fully understand the physical systems in play in that area, and the shorelines response.
- Help ensure the design meets project objectives regarding environmental impact.
- Must oversee the construction and ensure performance of systems.
What is Construction Engineering?
Construction Engineering is the management and delivery of construction projects. Construction is considered to be any building projects used for commercial, industrial and residential purposes.
Construction Engineers may specilise in certain types of structures.
What do Construction Engineers do?
- Plan construction activities
- Supervise installation of structural elements
- They compile reports which detail cost feasibilty and estimation of the project.
What is Earthquake Engineering?
Earthquake engineering is the science related to the performance of buildinga and structures when subjected to seismic loading.
Earthquake engineering aims for the proper design and construction of buildings in accordance to building codes.
What do Earthquake Engineers do?
-Ensure that buildings have appropritate protection against seismic loading, balancing the protection against the costs of construction and future repair.
