Unit 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the scope of a Coastal Engineer?

A

Coastal Engineers deal with problems relating to construction along coasts. Specialized Solutions to problems mainly present along the coast. For example, foundations that resist changing tides and soil erosion. Also protection from corrosion in a very humid environment and damaging salty water.

Q

What is the difference between an Isotropic and Anisotropic material?

A

An isotropic material has identical values of properties in all directions, they will react the same no matter where on the material the force is acting.

Anisotropic materials have directional properties. Depending on the direction of the force, the material will act differently. For example, bone, wood and composites/polymers.

Q

Describe Tensile loading.

A

The type of loading in which the two sections of material on either side of a plane tend to be pulled apart or elongated.

Q

Describe Compression loading.

A

Reverse of Tensile loading and involves pressing the material together.

Q

Describe Bent loading.

A

Involves applying a load in a manner that causes a material to curve and results in compressing the material on one side and stretching it on the other.

7
Q

Describe Shear loading.

A

Involves applying a load parallel to a plane which caused the material on one side of the plane to want to slide across the material on the other side of the plane.

Q

What is the difference between Shear Stress and Normal Stress?

A

Normal stress acts perpendicular to the force being applied, imagine a stack of coins glued to get and being pulled apart.

Shear stress is parallel to the applied force. Imagine two coins glued together and trying to slide the coins over each other.

Q

What is an easy method for increasing the compressive strength of concrete?

A

While curing the concrete, keeping the concrete wet for as long as possible increases the compressive strength.

Q

What are some benefits of 3D printing?

A
  • Saves time
  • Can continually operate
  • Doesn’t produce a lot of waste product
  • The little produced waste can be reused
  • Can be easily repaired.
