Brainstem Flashcards
whats the inferior brachium?
fibers connecting the medial geniculate body to the inferior colliculus
whats the superior brachium?
main fibers going from cerebral cortex and retina to superior
colliculus
whats the medial longitudinal fasciculus do?
connects cochlear and vestibular nuclei with nuclei connecting extraocular muscles (III, IV, VI)
where is the oculomotor nucleus located?
in the grey matter posterior to medial longitudinal fasciculus at the level of the superior colliculus
which cranial nerves come from the midbrain?
oculomotor nucleus and trochlear nucleus
note: mesencephalic nucleus of trigeminal nerve
at which level of the brainstem is the cerebral aqueduct seen?
midbrain
decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncles occur at the level of the inferior colliculus. T or F.
T
which nuclei of cranial nerves present in the pons at the level of the trigeminal nuceli?
- motor and sensory nuclei of the trigeminal nerve
what is the trapezoid body in the pons?
fibers derived from cochlear nuclei and they run transversely in the anterior part of the tegmentum
what are the pontine nuclei?
- small masses of nerve cells whose axons give transverse fibers which intersect corticospinal and corticonuclear tracts, breaking them into small bundles
- these transverse fibers enter the middle cerebellar peduncles to go to the cerebellar hemisphere (main pathway connecting cerebellum to cerebral cortex)
which fibers terminate in the pontine nuclei?
corticopontine fibers of crus cerebri terminate in pontine nuclei
which tract joins the superior cerebellar peduncles?
anterior spinocerebellar tract
which nuclei of the cranial nerves are present in the pons at the level of the facial colliculus?
- spinal nucleus of trigeminal nerve
- abducent nucleus
- facial nucleus (motor)
- medial vestibular nucleus
- posterior and anterior cochlear nuclei
midbrain ascends through which opening?
opening of tentorium cerebelli (tentorium notch)
whats the striae medullaris?
portion of the cochlear division of the vestibulocochlear nerve
