In this sequence, we’ll be looking at what’s important to note when listening to a lecture, or studying a press article or academic paper.
PDN - intro program
We’ll then do an exercise, in groups of 2, on a press article.
PND - intro interview
While you’re working on your exercise, I’ll bring you into my office, 2 by 2, to talk about how you manage your revision time. This interview will be conducted in French, so that we can all feel more comfortable expressing our thougts.
PDN - 2 types of course
While you’re working on your exercise, I’ll bring you into my office, 2 by 2, to talk about how you manage your revision time. This interview will be conducted in French, so that we can all feel more comfortable expressing our thougts.
PDN - non course info claim
Another very important thing is to pay attention to what is not explicitly course content.
PDN - non course info example
Your teacher may start talking about a really interesting documentary he’s just seen on Arte. The documentary’s mention is a coincidence, and will not appear in the course materials. If you don’t make a note of it, the reference will probably be lost.
PDN - non tech 3 main type of info
there are 3 main types of information that are useful to collect: concepts, facts and arguments. Arugments are based on facts, and concepts and theories are the result of facts that are generalized.
PDN - non tech exemple arg based on fact
Example of an argument: France is a country capable of organizing world-class events. It proved this with the Olympic Games. Here, a fact is used to defend an idea.
PDN - non tech example concept based on fact
Example of a concept: global culture, with events like the Olympic Games, blockbusters in the cinema, global pop stars, today there are references known throughout the world, which is unique in the history of mankind. Here, we’ve taken the facts and turned them into a concept: global culture.
PDN - qinomic - present exo qinomic
Qinomic example: here’s a short text to illustrate the task of collecting information. I’ll read you the sentence. I’ve colored the important elements: green for concepts, blue for facts, orange for arguments & explanations.
PDN - qonimic - warning about what is collecting
If I ask you to collect information in a text, this is what you have to do.
PDN - qinomic - focus on BECAUSE
I draw your attention to the argument. In the source text, the little key word that signals the presence of an argument is “BUT”. When I rephrase the arugment, I try to put it in the form Affirmation BECAUSE justification. 99% of arguments can be rephrased using PARCE QUE.
