Brain Pt 2 Flashcards
Thalamus
Every sensory system except smell goes through here
- decides where things go
Fornix
Communication center of brain
Takes everything to their place. Stores memory
Hippocampus
Assigns places for things to be stored
Person cannot build new memories if they are damaged
Anterior grade amnesia occurs when damaged
Amigdula
When stimulated animals/ humans get hungry
- if removed, not as angry and no fear
Pituitary glands
Anterior and posterior lobe
Anterior lobe
Produces growth hormones
- Thyroid stimulating hormone (male)
- Prolactin (female)
- Follicle stimulating hormone (female)
- adrenocorticotropin (both)
- leutenizungs hormone (female)
Posterior lobe
Only two hormones
- vasopressin - regulates blood pressure
- oxytocin - good feeling (all around)
Thyroid gland
Produces regulated metabolism
- hyperthyroidism : person will be very thing
- hypothyroidism : person will be large
Parathyroid
Regulates calcium level in blood and bone
Adrenal gland
Located on top of kidney
- adrenal cortex (covers kidney)
- adrenal medulla (between adrenal cortex and kidney)
Corticosteroids
Immune system alert
Catecholamines
Adrenalin , non adrenalin
Pineal gland
Regulates sleep by secreting melatonin
Primary sexual characteristics
Penis and vagina
Secondary sexual characteristics
Boobs, small / big waist, deep voice, facial hair, muscles
Pancreas
Produce enzymes that help digest food
Endocrine system
Group of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep and mood
Survival anger is found where?
Hypothalamus
Both lambic system and endocrine system come into play
How do lambic system and endocrine system communicate?
Hypothalamus affects the endocrine system and governs the emotional center of our brain
Trust neurotransmitter
Oxytocin
Oxytocin?
Important to society because it deals with sexual arousal, recognition, trust, anxiety and mother-infant bonding. Helps with childbirth and breast feeding
Before MRI and PET scans, how did we know about the brain?
Doctors who performed surgeries discovered brain and grabbed basic knowledge. Knew that if impact to brain, damage was done.
Lambic system
Emotional center of brain
Dopamine
Orbital gyrus
Makes body feel good
Hormones and body behavior
Hormones influence the body to act and feel a certain way once released into the body. Human therefore reacts and does what they think is right
11 neuron transmitters
Acetylcholine, (PEA) Beta-Phenylethylamine, dopamine, endorphins, GABA, glutamate, histamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, oxytocin, seratonin, tyramine, melatonin
